Automatic MySQL Backup

Posted in Server Updates on March 25th, 2006

The previous backup script simply copied /var/lib/mysql which is a very poor method of backing up a MySQL database. So it’s like 2am but I just wrote a script to automatically dump a list of given databases. Kickass.  Set to run on wednesday mornings.

Stagnation

Well, MWeb is still running on the original PII machine, but alex and i have been extremely busy these past couple weeks, so it doesn’t look like it’s going to get done untill at least sometime next week, if not next weekend or later.

However I did get the backup scripts and log file rotation scripts sucessfully installed into root’s crontab, which they were not before.  I’m not sure if it’s a SuSE-specific thing or not, but apparently things in /etc/crontab don’t mean much?  I had to run the command crontab -e  (i think it was) which actually opens vi for you to write your own crontab, but it saved it for root, which it was not before.  So, looking in the /backup directory, I see 2 backups which I did not manually do, and were dated 3-13, and 3-20, both at 8:00am.  Perfect.   The log files for HoTTProxy have also been sucessfully archiving correctly.  Weird timestamps, but the correct dates.  I ask no questions.

The move is pending…..

Moving….

Well, good news…. I believe MWeb will soon be moving to a new server: from a PII-350  to a P4-2400 machine… (384mb to 512mb RAM)…. Hopefully this will get done this weekend.  The main reason is, because we want to add an MTA server to the current lineup of services… It should be pretty sweet, and of course the webserver and MySQL database should go a little faster as well… I will let you know when it gets done!  So yeah, mweb will probably be down for a little bit while we get all the stuff transfered, and the router-reconfigured.
